Nino Laisné, Folk Songs
Vidéo, 12min., 2014
Produced by Chambre 415, with the support of Pépinières Européennes pour Jeunes Artistes and the Artos Foundation
Produced during a residency in Nicosia, Folk Songs presents a collection of accounts by illegal immigrants and victims of human trafficking on the island of Cyprus. Stories told in a restrained tone are punctuated by spontaneous and intense singing. When the teller struggles to translate a state or a feeling into words, it is traditional songs that take over. In this way, a cappella voices crystallise questions of identity and integration thanks to a voice that is no longer singular but collective. The work provides a sensitive treatment of memory and the experience of being uprooted.
Born in 1985, Nino Laisné lives and works in Paris. He graduated with honours from the Bordeaux School of Fine Arts in 2009, and has since shown his work in many exhibitions and festivals. His artistic practice is developed around the film and photographic image.
